This page describes a part of the Mobile Dashboard's process for configuring database queries. For an introduction to the database query configuration process, see Section 6.1, “Introduction To Database Query Configuration”. For a general introduction to the online help manual, see Section 1.1, “Mobile Dashboard Online Help Manual Overview”.
This page allows you to edit the results returned from the database query and, therefore, what gets displayed to the mobile end users.
First, enter a name for the items returned from the database query. This name, e.g., 'Result', is used as the name of the data format for the list of returned results ('Item List Type', e.g., 'Result List Type'), and also for the data format for each individual result ('Item Type', e.g., "Result Type').
If you want to exclude a results field from being displayed, select it in the Query Output Item Fields and click on . To reverse this, select a Query Result Field from the Query Result Fields Excluded from the Output table at the bottom and click on .
You can order the output fields displayed to the mobile user (as columns) by selecting a Query Result Field and clicking on or as desired.
You can also edit any of the Query Result Fields. Select a field and click on . The Edit Query Output Item Field pop-up window then allows you to edit the Field Name (as you'd like it to appear on the mobile user's device) and the Field Format, where you can select either a Built-in data format (e.g., text, integer, date, etc.) or a Custom data format. If you select a custom data format, then select from among the available Data Format Files displayed in the left table. You can select one of the Data Formats displayed in the right table.
There are two other settings at the bottom of the Edit Query Output Item Field pop-up window. You can specify a replacement (for display) for null values retrieved from the database. Simply indicate what string you'd like to display for null. The default is a hyphen/dash (-). You can also specify another value to be considered "null" in case your database has a different string that indicates null.
When you are done editing the query output field, click on .
Finally, in order to customize how the query inputs are displayed to the user, you must first complete the step folloing this one, to configure the output dimensions, as needed, because all customizations to the display rules for the query inputs and outputs are erased by most changes to those inputs or outputs. So, complete the step following this one (except for customizing the output form), then return to this step and click to customize how the query outputs are displayed to the user.
Important: in order to link tasks to the output of a query, you must first save the query, and link them using the Create links to task step of the Make query available as a task activity (which is the second step of the Edit database query task and Add database query task). Links cannot be linked using . Also, you should not link tasks to the 'Output Type' for a query, nor to the "Item List Type' (e.g., 'Result List Type'). To link a task to a query result, you should link them to the 'Item Type' for the query result, (e.g., 'Result Type'), which is the data format used for each row of the SQL query results.
When you are completely done editing the query results, click on .
