10.4. Java MIDP 2.0 Managed Client

This page is part of the Mobile Dashboard Managed Clients online help. For an introduction to Managed Clients, see Section 10.1, “Managed Clients - Basic Concepts”. For a general introduction to the online help manual, see Section 1.1, “Mobile Dashboard Online Help Manual Overview”.

The Java MIDP 2.0 Managed Client includes all Java-enabled PDAs and smartphones. These include Palm Treos using the Palm Operating System, devices using the Symbian Operating System, as well as the wide variety of small form-factor consumer Java-enabled smartphones.

10.4.1. Prerequisites

Prior to downloading the Java MIDP 2.0 Managed Client, please ensure your mobile device satisfies the following requirements:

  • Your mobile device supports Java MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1 and has at least 2 MB free memory. Almost all phones that support Java have the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) built in. Treos are an exception.

  • If you have a Treo that does not have JVM, you can download it from Palm JVM Download Site. Once on your Treo, you will need to set some memory allocation settings as follows:

    • Open your Preferences and under the 'Other' section select IBM Java VM.

Set the Memory Maximum to 32Mb.

Set Maximum Java Thread Stack Size to 32Kb.

    • Increase the Power setting to 3 minutes. From the Treo Main Menu, go to Prefs, then Power, then Auto-off after, and then set the value to 3 minutes.

Be sure to Save your settings.

10.4.2. Download Procedure

To download the Java MIDP 2.0 Managed Client, follow these steps:

  1. For Palm OS Treo devices you'll need to launch the Java application on your device (either MIDlet HQ or IBM Java VM) and enter http://w4bi.com/mdw/ua/webalo-midp-ua.jad as the URL, and follow instructions. (If using the Mobile Dashboard Appliance, include the appliance's host name. The URL would be of the form http://your-appliance-host-name/md/ua/webalo-midp-ua.jad.)

For other Java-enabled phones, bring up your Internet browser, point it to http://w4bi.com/ua and follow instructions. (If using the Mobile Dashboard Appliance, include the appliance's host name instead of w4bi.com. The URL would thus be of the form http://your-appliance-host-name/ua.)

  2. Once the download completes, launch the Webalo client application.

  3. You can go ahead and connect to the Mobile Dashboard as a guest user to see a sample report. But if you want to view your company's reports, then do NOT connect as a guest user. Instead, on the Options screen (from the Webalo menu), enter your username and password. Be sure you Save the update.

  4. Go ahead and connect if asked. Otherwise, bring up the Webalo menu and select Refresh to connect to the Mobile Dashboard and receive the latest reports.

10.4.3. Useful Tips for Viewing Reports

The following functions and features may be useful to you:

  • The report you're viewing may (or may not) have dropdown menus near the top. If you see them, then the report was configured to allow the user to select portions of the report to view by selecting from among the items in the dropdown menus.

  • Displayed columns may be changed by navigating down to the column header (with the down button), navigating across (with the right button) to go right, and selecting the column of interest. Press OK (or Select) to bring up the menu of available columns to view, then navigate to your choice and press OK again to select that column.

  • If a cell in a row in a table is truncated and there is more text to view, there are two options to view the information: (a) scroll down to the applicable row and then scroll to the right (using the right button) to select a cell - this will bring up a "tool-tip" showing the full content of the cell, or (b) scroll down to the applicable row and select Menu (with the right menu button), and choose Expand Row.

  • There may be multiple screens (each showing different data) for a report. If so, the other screens are accessible from the Menu.

  • If you receive multiple reports, you can select from among them by bringing up the Webalo menu and selecting Activities which lists the reports you've received. Scroll to the desired report and select Display (from the menu) to view the report.

  • One important note for the Treo: When you leave the Mobile Dashboard, the Treo does not retain the report(s) the next time you launch the application. This is a security feature of the Treo.

10.4.4. Troubleshooting Advice

Most errors are due to intermittent network issues or incorrect device settings. A quick list of things to check for:

  • Coverage: check that you have good coverage.

  • Coverage Mode: check that you have full data access and not just phone coverage.

  • Internet Access: check that you can access public Internet sites.

  • Battery: If the battery is low the device may not be able to connect.

  • Data Plan: Make sure that you have a data plan that allows you TCP and SSL access.

  • Some older phones place limits on maximum application size. Ensure that your device supports applications with a size of at least 300KB.
